Daniel wakes in a field of light, beneath an unfamiliar sky, with no memory of how he got there. His confusion is met by a child who knows him, intimately. She leads him to a city of impossible beauty, a place that sings with joy and echoes with a profound, haunting purpose. What he discovers there will shatter his understanding of choice, consequence, and divine love. City of Promises is a visionary short story that explores the deepest corridors of regret and the luminous, unexpected shape of redemption. A story about the roads not taken, and the home built for those who travel them. |
Part 1: The Waking
The light did not invade my eyes so much as it dissolved into them, a gentle, golden dissolution that pushed back the shadows of a forgotten dream. I blinked, and the ceiling above me was alien. Not the familiar crack in the plaster, but a surface that seemed to breathe with a soft, pearlescent sheen. The air I drew into my lungs was different; it carried the scent of rain-kissed dawn mixed with the memory of a fragrant blossom. Every sound was a new note in a silent symphony, a distant, chiming whisper, the sigh of a breeze through leaves I could not see. Disorientation, cold and sharp, prickled along my skin. Where am I?
Part 2: The Recognition
And then, she was there. Standing amidst the cascade of luminescent colours. A little girl of about nine, with a cascade of dark hair that held hints of chestnut and midnight, and skin the warm tan of sun on river stones. She wore a simple yellow sundress and scuffed sneakers, as if she’d just run in from a playground on an endless summer afternoon. She stood with an impossible stillness, yet her whole being seemed to vibrate with contained energy.
“Who are you? Where am I?” My voice was a rusty hinge in the glorious quiet.
She turned. And she giggled, a sound like crystal bells. “Oh, daddy, you Silly Billy, don’t you know?”
The word, daddy, didn’t just enter my ears. It detonated in the center of my chest. A physical tremor ran through me. My breath hitched. I don’t have another daughter. Deanne and I only have Michael and Noelle… but we would have… My mind, a trapped animal, scrambled for the cliff of reason.
“Who…” I tried again, the word crumbling. I swallowed, forcing air into my lungs. “Who are you?” It was a plea this time, desperate for her to say something.
Her smile didn’t falter. It softened, deepened with a knowing patience that was far older than her nine years. She stepped forward. The air between us seemed to thicken, charged with a gentle power.
Slowly, deliberately, she raised her small hands, palms open, in a gesture that was both an invitation and a gentle command.
And my knees gave way. I sank down into the luminous grass, not by conscious choice, but as a reflex, a submission to the gravity of the moment. Now our eyes were level.
She cupped my face. Her touch was real and solid. Her thumbs brushed my cheekbones, her fingers resting gently on my temples, holding my gaze prisoner. The playful giggle was gone from her voice, replaced by a whisper of absolute, loving clarity.
“Look,” she breathed, the word meant for me alone. “Just… look. Who do you see?”
In that suspended silence, held by her hands and her eyes, the walls I had built over a decade, walls of justification, of locked-away grief, of it-was-for-the-best, simply vaporized.
And I saw…
